Visa and Mastercard casinos in Australia and NZ: debit cards, declines and the credit-card ban

Every casino we review takes Visa and Mastercard for deposits, but Australia's 2024 credit-card ban, bank gambling blocks and a 3% international fee change which card to use. Here is what works, what it costs, why cards get declined, and how you actually get paid.

How to deposit with Visa & Mastercard

1
Pick the right card
In Australia use a debit card: since 11 June 2024 licensed operators may not accept credit cards, and NAB credit cards refuse international gambling outright. Check in your banking app that no gambling lock is on and that online and international transactions are allowed.
2
Deposit in the cashier
Open Deposit, choose Visa or Mastercard, enter the amount (A$10 at Bizzo, A$20 at Golden Crown and Richard, A$25 at RocketPlay, A$30 at Neospin, Spin Samurai and Need for Spin) and the card details, then approve the 3-D Secure code your bank sends.
3
Watch the currency
Some cashiers bill in euros. Choose AUD or NZD where the option exists; the transaction is still processed by an overseas acquirer, so the big four Australian banks add their 3% international fee regardless of currency.
4
Plan the payout before you play
Card withdrawals are slow or absent. Upload ID, proof of address and a photo of the card early, then withdraw to bank transfer, an e-wallet or crypto — the Banking table in each review says which.

Pros and cons

Accepted for deposits on the official cashier of every casino we review
Instant credit, with 3-D Secure confirmation from your own bank
Debit cards are outside the 2024 Australian credit-card ban
Australian banks charge a 3% international transaction fee even when you pay in AUD
Gambling transactions on a credit card are treated as cash advances by ANZ, CommBank, NAB and Westpac; NAB blocks them internationally
Three of our seven recommended casinos cannot pay winnings back to a card, and the rest take 1–5 days plus a pending queue
Merchant code 7995 makes card deposits the easiest transaction for a bank to decline

Where to get a Visa or Mastercard in Australia and New Zealand

Any transaction account comes with one; the question is which card a cashier will take, and that changed on 11 June 2024. Since then section 15C of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (inserted by the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Act 2023) makes it an offence — 500 penalty units criminal, 750 civil — for “a regulated interactive gambling service that is a wagering service” to accept a credit card, a credit-linked account or digital currency from a customer in Australia. Lotteries are exempt. Those bound are licensed Australian bookmakers. Offshore casinos are “prohibited” services under the same Act, so section 15C does not reach them and the Act has never penalised the player; their cashiers still show a card form, and it works with a debit card.

New Zealand has copied the design. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, in force since 1 May 2026, licenses up to 15 operators and bans credit cards and buy-now-pay-later at licensed sites; in Simpson Grierson’s words “it would not be illegal under the Act for consumers themselves to gamble with an unlicensed operator”. Unlicensed sites are prohibited from 1 December 2026 (1 June 2027 if they applied for a licence).

Setting it up

Nothing on the card. What matters is the gambling switch in your banking app: most banks below offer one as an opt-in, only Macquarie applies it without asking (credit cards), and each imposes a wait before it comes off again.

BankWhereCardsWait to remove
CommBankApp or NetBank, Lock, Block, Limit; six-month credit-card block by phone (1800 222 387)Credit and debit48 hours

Then deposit: open the cashier, choose Visa or Mastercard, enter the amount and card details, and approve the one-time code your bank sends. The balance updates at once.

Fees, limits and timing

What the casino charges. None of the seven casinos we recommend publishes a card deposit fee. Minimums run from €10 (Bizzo) through A$20 (Golden Crown, Richard Casino) and A$25 (RocketPlay, which caps card deposits at A$6,000) to A$30 (Neospin, Spin Samurai, Need for Spin). Three general terms cost more than any fee: Spin Samurai requires deposits to be wagered three times before withdrawal, Need for Spin charges 10% on a deposit withdrawn unwagered, and Richard Casino requires 1x on pokies or 3x elsewhere.

What the bank charges. The casino’s acquirer is overseas, so ANZ, CommBank, NAB and Westpac each add a 3% international transaction fee — Choice confirms it applies even when the merchant bills in Australian dollars. On a credit card the same deposit is a cash advance at those four banks: a cash-advance fee plus interest from the day of purchase, with no interest-free days.

Timing. Deposits are instant. Card withdrawals, where they exist, are quoted at 1–3 days (Neospin, Golden Crown) or 1–5 days (Bizzo, Spin Samurai); Neospin holds every request for up to 48 hours before that clock starts.

When it fails

Declined with money in the account. Card networks tag every gambling merchant with category code 7995, and the issuer decides what to do with it: NAB refuses it on credit cards, Macquarie blocks it on credit cards permanently, ANZ declines it above 85% of a credit limit, and every opt-in block above works by refusing that code. Check the app for a gambling lock and for “online purchases” or “international” switches, and use debit rather than credit. If you have just removed a block, wait it out (table above); repeated retries can trip fraud rules.

Declined without a 3-D Secure prompt. Your bank never saw it, so the refusal came from the casino’s card processor — usually the card’s country or type. Ask support which processor handles AUD or NZD cards, or change method.

The block let it through. Every bank warns of this in its own terms: CommBank “some transactions may still go through”, Macquarie cannot see a merchant “categorised under another merchant category code”, Revolut cannot stop companies that “use different MCCs to hide their gambling services”. A deposit that shows on your statement under an unfamiliar company name was routed that way; a chargeback would then be a dispute with that company, not the casino.

The cashier differs from the review. Method lists vary by account currency — RocketPlay’s NZ accounts get Neosurf and Skrill that AU ones do not, and Bizzo’s AUD support is uncertain (AskGamblers and LCB list it, Casino Guru does not). Pick the currency at registration.

Prepaid card refused. Australia Post’s and Gift Card Planet’s terms both warn of gambling declines. A Neosurf voucher is the cash-bought alternative casinos do accept.

Withdrawing

Four of the seven casinos we recommend list card withdrawals (Golden Crown, Bizzo, Spin Samurai, Neospin); Need for Spin, Richard Casino and RocketPlay do not pay to cards at all, nor do WinSpirit, Joe Fortune or ThePokies.net among the wider set we review. Even where a card payout exists it takes 1–5 days, and Golden Crown, Need for Spin and Spin Samurai process nothing at weekends. Plan for one of the other routes:

  1. Crypto (USDT on Tron or Bitcoin): “instant” to 24 hours after approval at Golden Crown, Need for Spin, Richard Casino, RocketPlay and Neospin; Spin Samurai quotes up to 72 hours, Bizzo states no time. RocketPlay skips verification before a first crypto withdrawal. The USDT guide lists the AU and NZ exchanges for selling the coins.
  2. E-wallet (Skrill, Neteller, MiFinity): 0–1 hour after approval at Golden Crown and Neospin, up to 24 hours at Bizzo, Need for Spin and Spin Samurai, instant at Richard Casino and RocketPlay.
  3. Bank transfer: 1–5 days at Neospin and Golden Crown, 3–5 at Richard Casino, 3–7 at Bizzo, Spin Samurai, Need for Spin and RocketPlay; minimums A$300 (Neospin), €300 (Golden Crown), €500 (Bizzo); Richard Casino passes on bank charges “typically up to €16”.

Every casino above verifies identity before the first payout — ID, proof of address and, at Neospin and Need for Spin, a photo or screenshot of the card you deposited with. Send the documents the day you deposit, not the day you win.

FAQ

Which online casinos accept Visa in Australia and New Zealand?
All seven casinos we recommend — Golden Crown, Bizzo, Spin Samurai, Neospin, Need for Spin, Richard Casino and RocketPlay — list Visa and Mastercard for deposits; the toplist on this page is generated from those reviews. Only Golden Crown, Bizzo, Spin Samurai and Neospin also list card withdrawals.
Can I use a credit card at an online casino in Australia?
Since 11 June 2024 the Interactive Gambling Act makes it an offence for a licensed Australian wagering service to accept a credit card, a credit-linked wallet or digital currency. Offshore casinos are not licensed here, so the section does not bind them, but your bank still sees merchant code 7995: NAB credit cards decline international gambling, and ANZ, CommBank and Westpac treat it as a cash advance with fees and interest from day one. A debit card avoids all of that.
Can I play pokies with a debit card?
Yes. Debit cards are not covered by the Australian ban or by New Zealand's Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, both of which target credit. A Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard from any AU or NZ bank works in every cashier we review, provided you have not switched on the bank's gambling block and the bank allows international online purchases.
Why was my card declined at an online casino?
In order of likelihood: a gambling block is on (CommBank, ANZ, NAB, Westpac, Kiwibank, ANZ NZ, Westpac NZ and Revolut all offer one); the card is a credit card at a bank that refuses gambling; international or online purchases are switched off; 3-D Secure was not completed; or the card is a prepaid gift card, which the Australia Post and Gift Card Planet terms say may be declined at gambling merchants. Fix the setting, wait out any cooling-off period, and retry once — repeated attempts can trigger fraud rules.
